CASTLEBAR GOLF CLUB - BEST PRESENTED COURSE 2010

Welcome to the website of Castlebar Golf Club, voted “Best Presented Course Connaught 2010”

Phyxers @ Castlebar Golf Club

Monday evenings from April through September is Phyxers night for golfers whose handicap is 18 or greater. It is a very popular grouping with great numbers playing.

The 2012 Phyxer Captain is Liam Burke and he has a full calendar of events planned for the year, culminating in his Phyxer Captain's Prize on 17th August.

Phyxer's Matchplay Competition

The Phyxers singles Matchplay competition is over 18 holes. The draw combinations are on the notice board in the foyer of the Club house. Full handicaps apply i.e. if 18 plays 24, then the 18 handicap gives the 24 handicap a shot at index 1 to 6.  If a golfer drops out of Phyxers (<18) he is no longer eligible to compete in the Monday competition or Matchplay.

2012 Phyxer Season

The Phyxers are back in action on the fairways for 2012. As many members say, if the Phyxers are back the Summer is not far behind.

Phyxer News...........

Phyxer's - Monday 6th August 2012 - Tuesday, August 07, 2012

Into August and the summer is here and Phyxers are out in force to avail of the Phyxers competition (generously sponsored by John Gibbons), and the club open. Amazingly another new winner tonight with Dermot Reilly taking the spoils with a fabulous 33 points after a point deduction for an earlier frame position. This score was exceptional over 14 holes where the pin placings were set to challenge the ladies in a Connaught competition. John Mitchell was in second place on 29 points beating Matt Flynn on a count back. All Phyxers are encouraged to seek a time that suits them for the Phyxers Captains Day on Friday 17 August. The spread of winners means the Phyxer of the Year is still up for grabs.  Next Monday is the final chance to to get into that winning position but at this stage it looks like it will be decided on the Final day on Friday. Good luck to all contenders

Phyxer's - Monday 9th July 2012 - Tuesday, July 10, 2012

25 Phyxers turned out despite the wind and rain last Monday for the Stauntons sponsored 14 hole competition.  The winner was Pat Healy . Ian Smyth was second and Tom Cresham was third. Nearest the pin went to Keith Finnan….a defiant response from the Kilkenny man to Galway’s shock win on Sunday.

The Phyxer Match Play is at Semi final stage.  Winner of Matt Flynn/ Tom Martyn play Pat Healy and in second semi final Tom Walsh plays Dermot Reilly

Next Monday is Open Week and all Phyxers are asked to support the Club by playing as often as possible during the week.

The Phyxers will have a competition next Monday 16th July.  Pay for Open Week competition and you can enter Phyxers for free. However you must , put in a separate score card for Phyxers and also sign book.

Best of luck to Cecil Ewing team next Saturday V Westport.
Phyxer's - Monday 11th June 2012 - Tuesday, June 12, 2012
The weather tonight started warm and windy but ended chilly, just like Irelands performance last night. An excellent turnout of 43 players but scores were moderate due in some part to the Pin placings for the Jimmy Bruen match - another win for Castlebar - all good news for the club.  Al McDonnell provided generous sponsorship to the Phyxers but couldn't attend due to business commitments. On the night we had another new winner in Paddy Kenny returning to form with 30 points. However the other positions were fought out by previous members in the frame with Ian Smyth in second place on 28 points but had to be reduced by 2 points. He got second on a count back from Thomas Walsh also on 28 points and 2 points deducted. Tom Martyn, Galway overcame Rosscommon's Mick Lyons in the match play after an epic battle by two tough competitors. It was decided that next week's Phyxers competition should be reduced to 9 holes to allow Ireland to qualify for the knockout stages of EURO 2012.
Phyxer's - Monday 21st May 2012 - Tuesday, May 22, 2012
Summer arrived and Phyxers went wild. The winner Vincent Conlon had a phenomenal score of 37 points, Thomas Jennings had an eagle at the 3rd, and Roger Towey capped it all off with a hole in one at the 16th. There were some objections regarding the hole in one as certain individuals suggested that technically the hole in one could not be not on the 'green'. The objections were overruled and Roger got a bottle of Brandy for his accuracy. Second and third went to Dermot Reilly and Pat Healy respectively. Another new winner for the 9th week in a row and a new man in the frame in second place. Pat continues to progress his interest for Phyxer of the Year but with the changing winners and 1 point for participation nothing is sure yet. All out again next Monday for more surprises
Phyxer's - Monday 14th May 2012 - Tuesday, May 15, 2012
Today is classified the Phyxer for all Seasons as we had sunshine, wind, rain and hailstones but in line with the Phyxer temperament there was calm as well. Given the conditions there was a great turnout in support of our sponsor Thomas Jennings, Castlebar Farm Machinery who took on Brian Healy in a round of the Phyxers Matchplay. We had a new winner for the eight week running when Thomas (Brose) Walsh came through with 30 points. He won on a count back from Brian Healy who also got nearest the pin on the 16th. Damian Curren was third with 29 points.  All out again next Monday.  The presentation takes place immediately after the last card is registered. Meeting in the club house after the game is an important part of the Phyxers and the more that come the better.
Phyxer's - Monday 2nd April 2012 - Tuesday, April 03, 2012
The second outing of Phyxers was very well supported with 40 out including 10 new entrants. It started wet but when the rain moved there were ideal golfing conditions albeit a little chilly for those who were delayed. Good to see many more coming to the clubhouse for the prize giving as the meeting after the game is an essential part of the Phyxer experience. The scoring is still improving with two birdies on each of the winning cards.    Pat Healy was first with a massive score of 26 points over 10 holes - he won it on a count back from Liam Burke. In third place was recently returned Phyxer Jonathan Rice with 25 points.  Next Monday will include the possibility of playing Phyxers and the club competition for €7 off the white tees
