Castlebar Golf Club - "The Augusta of Connaught"

Originally founded in 1910, Castlebar Golf Club underwent several transformations, the last being the total redesign to its current layout measuring 6,420 yards with 18 sand based greens and tees. The course offers a variety of holes, each with its own unique challenge.


Castlebar Golf Club is a friendly and welcoming club, with members and visitors alike made feel welcome.  The course is open all year round with only the severest of weather impacting on the course.  The clubhouse has been recently extended and refurbished to provide top-class facilities.  Catering and hospitality in the bar is provided by Joey McDonnell who has many years experience in the hospitality trade and he offers home-cooked meals with friendly personal service at very keen rates.

The club is open for new members as well as for visitors and societies.  All in packages are provided for societies, including golf and meal at very competitive rates, giving the opportunity to play a very fine course and then to relax afterwards over some delicious food.  

Visitors Welcome

Visitors are always welcome at Castlebar Golf Club.  The course is  all-weather with only frost causing it to be closed.
Green fee rates are very reasonable - just €20 for an adult up to the end of March and times are almost always available.
Societies and groups are also welcome - contact the club for further information on how we can facilitate your society or group.

2013 Barcastle Trophy - Club Fourball Matchplay Championship

The Barcastle Trophy is the Trophy awarded to the winners of the club's Fourball Matchplay Championship  and is sponsored by Barcastle Industries and the Mulroy Family.  All members interested in entering are requested to write their names on the sheet provided in the hall of the clubhouse.
The draw for the 2013 Barcastle Trophy has been postponed for one week so there is still time to get your names in the hat!  New draw date is now next Tuesday night, 7th May!

Seniors (Over 55) Match - Swinford Vs Castlebar - Tues 21st May

The Seniors (Over 55) Interclub competition kicked off for Castlebar with a Round 2 Match against Swinford on Tuesday 21st May 2013.  This was an away fixture for Castlebar meaning 3 matches in Swinford and 2 in Castlebar.
In Swinford the first pair out for Castlebar was John MacDonagh & John McHale and with both Johns firing on all cylinders they took control of the match from the start and built up a 3 hole lead, finally closing out the match with a 6 and 4 victory.
Next out was the pairing of Mick Byrne & T.J. Prendergast, this match was hard fought throughout with Mick & T.J. going into a 2 hole deficit.  Similarly Eamon Mongan & Junior Prendergast were in a tough match and also went into a 2 hole deficit.
At home in Castlebar, Stephen Munnelly & Padraig Rice were first out and they had to play well to gain a 3 hole lead by the 16th tee and when they halved the hole they had won 3 and 4.  Brian Ainsworth & Michael Sheridan took control of their match from the start and won on the 11th hole.
With 3 matches won by Castlebar and the result secured the remaining 2 matches in Swinford were called in.
Overall Result, Castlebar 4 matches, Swinford 1 match.
Well done to Paul Doyle the team captain and the team for a great performance! 

A.I.B. sponsored competition - Saturday 18th & Sunday 19th May

The competition played over the weekend of Saturday 18th & Sunday 19th May at Castlebar Golf Club was an 18 hole stableford for ladies and gents and was kindly sponsored by Allied Irish Bank, Main Street, Castlebar. Once again the weather played a part in the weekend with the Saturday being a very poor day with almost constant rain while Sunday showed signs of summer with decent temperatures and no rain.

The winner of the competition was Donal O'Donoghue who posted a fine 42 points.  Jim McGovern took 2nd place just one point back with 41 points.  Kevin Barry won the gross prize while Sean Haugh took 3rd place with 40 points. 

Ilish McGing was the best of the Ladies in this competition, posting a great 39 points to win the competition.  Christine Gordon took 2nd place with her 34 points, edging out Anne O'Sullivan after a count-back - Anne's 34 points earning her 3rd place while Mary McHale was 4th with 33 points.  

2013 Charity Day at Castlebar Golf Club

Every year the Lady members of Castlebar Golf Club host a charity day and all proceeds from the day are donated to a designated charity.  This year the charity day was held on Wednesday 15th May and thanks to the magnificent organisation by the Ladies it was a resounding success with almost €2,000 raised.  The weather was not very cooperative but still the members turned out in their droves to support the day.  A coffee morning was held in the clubhouse and there was an 18 hole competition for ladies as well as a 13 hole one and also an 18 hole competition for the gents.
Of course such was the variety of delicious home baked cakes and pastries available in the clubhouse that some members had serious difficulty in forcing themselves away to actually play golf!

The results on the day were as follows:

Ladies 18 Hole Competition:
1st:  Margaret Naughton    43 Points
2nd:  Carmel Connaughton   36 Points
3rd:   Rosaleen Heverin      36 Points
4th:  Claire Granahan       36 Points.

Gents 18 Hole Competition:
1st:  John MacDonagh    43 Points
2nd:  James McHugh    40 Points.

Ladies 13 Hole Competition:
1st: Marie Rowley   30 Points
2nd:  Ann McGovern   24 Points
3rd:   Evelyn Brady   24 Points.

O'Malley & Co. Accountants 18 Hole Stroke - Sat 11th & Sun 12th May

The competition played over the weekend of Saturday 11th & Sunday 12th May at Castlebar Golf Club was an 18 hole stroke and was sponsored by O'Malley & Company, Chartered Accountants, Chapel Street, Castlebar.
There was a great turnout of members to play in this competition and they could all have been excused for thinking it was 11th & 12th November such was the weather that prevailed.  Saturday had constant very strong winds with some savage squally showers while Sunday was slightly better with strong wind and quickly passing showers.
Billy Evans was the winner with a great score of 67 nett compiled on Sunday morning.   Louis Walsh took 2nd place with 70 nett beating Paddy Grogan on a count back, Paddy's 70 nett getting him 3rd place.
Shane O'Connor played his round in 2 over par gross winning him the Gross prize with 73 gross.
This was a stableford competition for Ladies and the winner was Deirdre Moylett with a score of 36 points.  Betty Gannon took 2nd place with 35 points while Derval Molloy took 3rd with 34 points and Nuala McGowan was 4th with 33 points. 

Conway's Citroen & Kia Dealer - Sat 4th & Sun 5th May

Edward Conway's Citroen & Kia dealer, Breaffy Road, Castlebar were the sponsors of the 18 hole stableford competition played over the weekend of Saturday 4th & Sunday 5th May.  Weather conditions were quite challenging, with Saturday proving the more difficult day with a brisk wind although the day was dry. 

The winner after a count back was Sean Haugh with 39 points.  Second place went to Brian Connolly also with 39 points.  Ken Irwin took the gross prize while Michael Sheridan posted 37 points on Sunday morning to take 3rd place.

In the Ladies section Maire Barry was the winner with a fine score of 39 Points.  Karen Moylette & Bernie Burke both scored 34 Points and after a countback 2nd place went to Karen Moylette and 3rd place to Bernie Burke while Mary Bourke was 4th with 33 Points.

Final Reminder Re Membership Subscription.

Following notification issued on 20th April members who have failed to pay their Membership Fee for 2013 having being duly notified in accordance with the Club's Constitution, "their membership is automatically terminated and they shall cease to hold and have their handicap dealt with by the Club"  (Article 12, Castlebar Golf Club Constitution).

NEW Ladies 9 Hole Competition

New for Lady members of Castlebar Golf Club are the 9 hole qualifying competitions on Wednesdays for ladies who are unable to play in the 18 hole.  The competition draw time on Wednesdays for this 9 hole competition is at 11AM.

Lady Beginners Introduction to Golf.

Introduction to golf for Lady Beginners Club continue each Wednesday evening at 7PM!  All those interested in taking up the game are welcome to attend these sessions.
