Castlebar Golf Club - "The Augusta of Connaught"

Castlebar Golf Club

Originally founded in 1910, Castlebar Golf Club underwent several transformations, the last being the total redesign to its current layout measuring 6,420 yards with 18 sand based greens and tees. The course offers a variety of holes, each with its own unique challenge.

Castlebar Golf Club is a friendly and welcoming club, with members and visitors alike made feel welcome.  The course is open all year round with only the severest of weather impacting on the course.  The clubhouse has been recently extended and refurbished to provide top-class facilities.  Catering and hospitality in the bar is provided by Joey McDonnell who has many years experience in the hospitality trade and he offers home-cooked meals with friendly personal service at very keen rates!

The club is open for new members as well as for visitors and societies.  All in packages are provided for societies, including golf and meal at very competitive rates, giving the opportunity to play a very fine course and then to relax afterwards over some delicious food.

Oireachtas Golf Society Visits Castlebar Golf Club - Sunday, May 06, 2012
The Oireachtas Golf Society held their 2012 Captain's Prize at Castlebar Golf Club on Friday 4th May 2012.  The Captain of the Society is Senator Paddy Burke, a resident of Castlebar, native of Ballyglass and Cathairleach of Seanad Eireann.  Senator Burke stated early in the year he intended to hold his Captain's Prize at Castlebar and a lot of work was put into the event to ensure its success.
It turned out to be a fairly good day although the North wind did add a definite winter feel to the day but this did not dampen the day in any way.  There was a great turnout of Society members to honour Paddy on his day and as well there was a huge entry of Castlebar members in the Castlebar members section!
Many of the Society members were heard to say that at least with Burke not able to win his own prize that it was open to them to win!  Senator Burke did however bring in the winner of the 2012 Oireachtas Golf Society Captain's Prize, one John Donnellan, Captain of the Galway three in a row All-Ireland winning football team, former T.D. in Galway who posted a marvelous score of 42 points to win.
In the Castlebar Members section Jim Tiernan carded a fantastic score of 43 points to win while John McHugh scored 42 to take 2nd place and John Prendergast took 3rd place, also with 42 points.
Another Castlebar Native, An Taoiseach Enda Kenny, an Honorary Life Member of Castlebar Golf Club, also played in the event and was present in the club in the evening for the presentation.  Mr. Kenny also planted a tree on the course and in the course of the presentation he presented Club Captain Henry Horkan with a framed 2012 Ryder Cup flag signed by both the U.S. Team Captain Davis Love III and the Europe Captain, José Mariá Olazabal which had been presented to him by the U.S. President Barrack Obama during the Taoiseach's visit to the White House on St. Patrick's Day.
Overall it was a wonderful day for all, the Society, Castlebar Golf Club and all the people who played.
