Castlebar Golf Club - "The Augusta of Connaught"

Originally founded in 1910, Castlebar Golf Club underwent several transformations, the last being the total redesign to its current layout measuring 6,420 yards with 18 sand based greens and tees. The course offers a variety of holes, each with its own unique challenge.

Castlebar Golf Club is a friendly and welcoming club, with members and visitors alike made feel welcome.  The course is open all year round with only the severest of weather impacting on the course.  The clubhouse has been recently extended and refurbished to provide top-class facilities.  Catering and hospitality in the bar is provided by Joey McDonnell who has many years experience in the hospitality trade and he offers home-cooked meals with friendly personal service at very keen rates.

The club is open for new members as well as for visitors and societies.  All in packages are provided for societies, including golf and meal at very competitive rates, giving the opportunity to play a very fine course and then to relax afterwards over some delicious food.

Double Connacht Glory for Castlebar Golf Club

There was double Connacht glory for Castlebar Golf Club on Saturday when both the Ladies Junior Cup team and the Mens Jack O’Sullivan team won Connacht titles.

Ladies Junior Cup

The Ladies paved the way with a fantastic win at Athlone GC defeating Athenry in the final to bring a Ladies Connacht Penant back to Castlebar for the first time in 20 years.

Lorna Irwin & Sheila Baynes won their matches to get 2 points on the board early with Connie White losing her match narrowly in a great battle.

Carmel Moran closed out the overall win winning her match on the 19th with Leah Kerr still in a great position all square playing 18 when she was called in. Well done to Team Captain Breta Fitzmaurice and her squad on a thrilling victory.

Jack O’Sullivan

In the Mens Jack O’Sullivan final Castlebar faced an uphill task having lost the first leg in Oughterard 4-1. In an epic battle with momentum ebbing and flowing throughout the day the final result was 4-1 to the home team with Ryan O’Malley & Declan Prendergast winning their match on the 20th and Tom Moylett & Ray Prendergast winning on the 19th. This followed earlier wins by Brendan Frost & Shane Rice on the 17th and Ian Brennan & Pat Waldron on the 14th. Ger Noone & Johan Collins fought hard all day eventually losing out on the 18th.

This left the overall score for the 2 legs at 5-5 and it was up to Team Captain John Kelly to nominate a pairing on the day for another playoff to determine the winner.

John astutely went for Tom Moylett & “Lucky” Ray Prendergast and lucky it proved to be as they secured a par on the 1st hole to win the play off  retain the title the Club won last year. A fantastic achievement for the club and well done to all involved.
